Incorrect gearbox installation and its consequences
Gearboxes are a key component of drive systems, as they transmit torque from the electric motor to the working mechanism. They make it possible to reduce rotational speed, increase the traction characteristics of the drive, adapt it to a specific technological process, and ensure precise and smooth motion. The reliable performance of a gearbox directly impacts the efficiency of all production equipment — from conveyors to mills, mixers, extruders, and cranes.

However, gearbox installation is not just a technical procedure — it is a critically important stage that determines the smooth operation of the entire system. Even the most reliable and expensive mechanism can fail if installed incorrectly.

Typical installation errors:

1. Misalignment with the motor or driven mechanism
Misalignments cause uneven loads on bearings and gears. This leads to increased wear, vibration, noise, and premature failures. Even deviations within 0.1–0.2 mm can result in bearing overheating, oil leakage, seal damage, and accelerated wear.

2. Incorrect mounting on the frame
If the base is not rigid enough or is misaligned, the gearbox deforms during operation, disrupting tooth engagement accuracy and reducing transmission efficiency. This is an incorrect formulation.

3. Insufficient or excessive lubrication
Both scenarios are equally harmful. A lack of lubrication results in overheating and wear. Excess lubrication can cause foaming, power losses, seal failure, and leakage.

4. Incorrect installation of the torque arm
The gearbox and driven equipment shafts must be precisely aligned and operate as a single unit. Vibrations and dynamic loads should be transmitted through the torque arm and absorbed at its frame attachment point.
It’s important for the torque arm’s damping bushing to have a slight degree of movement to compensate for shifts. If the arm is rigidly clamped, it leads to excessive bearing loads, oil leakage, seal damage and accelerated gearbox wear.

5. Gearbox ordered for one mounting position but installed in another
Example: A gearmotor was ordered for a standard horizontal mounting position (motor shaft horizontal).

But was installed vertically, with the motor facing upward.

Consequence: improper lubrication of the high-speed stage due to insufficient oil supply, leading to critical wear in a short period of time.

Consequences of іmproper іnstallation:

  • Reduction of gearbox service life by 2 to 5 times.
  • Failure of bearings and gear sets.
  • Warranty issues (manufacturers do not cover damages of incorrect installation).
  • Production downtime and financial losses.

Conclusion:

Reducer assembly is an area of special responsibility. To ensure long-lasting and reliable operation, it is necessary to follow the manufacturer's recommendations, use precision tools for centering and vibration control and involve qualified specialists.

Correct installation is not an additional stage, but the key to fully utilizing the technical potential of the gearbox.
