Timing belts are represent a modern milestone in the history of engineering development of belt transmissions compared to their "predecessor" - V-belts.

Timing belts transmit torque by engaging the teeth of the belt with the teeth of the pulley, which allows for high positioning accuracy of the transmission and the ability to transmit higher powers compared to V-belt transmissions.
